In February 2008 the Morning Sky Treatment Centre program underwent
a few changes. No longer focused just on gambling Morning Sky is now
delivering a more in depth program; based on healing and dealing with
core issues.
The Morning Sky
Centre is located on the Frog Lake First Nation overlooking Frog
Lake. The setting
is enhanced by the bright morning sky and
the sunset. A seven member Board of Directors representing the
six First Nations and one independent First Nation within the Tribal
Chiefs Ventures Inc. – Goodfish Lake, Frog Lake, Cold Lake,
Heart Lake, Kehewin, Beaver Lake, and Saddle Lake, governs the operation.
The Centre commenced
operation in November 2004 with the first intake of clients into
the program. The program grants priority to those from
within the Alberta Region, then to all First Nations within Canada,
NWT and Yukon. The services are available to other groups for a daily
fee. Community based workshops and seminars are available to groups
and First Nations upon request.
The Staff
The staff
of Morning Sky are all First Nation from various parts of the country,
they are all highly qualified and certified treatment
counselors. Our facilities are well maintained and include a full
size gymnasium and well equipped
fitness facility for the fitness
minded.
Our meals are carefully planned along a non-fat and nutritious
menu format.
Mission
Our mission
at Morning Sky Centre is to help individuals and communities establish
healthy and responsible behaviours
to combat and address
alcohol and drug abuse and gambling related harm. The program
places a strong emphasis on education and provision of
treatment for those
experiencing alcohol and drug related harm.
The main purpose of the community based education component is to
strengthen the
capacity of communities to respond to the harmful impacts
of alcohol and drug abuse.
Our Goals:
- To promote
alcohol and drug free lifestyles and safe gambling practices among
First Nations.
- To ensure that
all First Nation communities, organizations and individuals
have information, skills and encouragement to reduce
risk from alcohol/drug abuse and addictions related harm, with special
attention to those at
increased risk.
- To ensure that
those experiencing problems know what services and supports are available,
where and
how to get assistance.
- To initiate and
participate in quality research studies to guide the development
of targeted and effective public
awareness
and education initiatives.
